Packers Expected to Sever Ties With Projected $48 Million Playmaker After Rocky Relationship… SADBOIZ

The Green Bay Packers have one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFL, though one of the team’s most consistent and prominent performers is likely to play elsewhere in 2026.

Green Bay has a handful of legitimate No. 2 wideouts, but the lack of a true No. 1 option has been a subject of analytical focus for years. As such, wideout Romeo Doubs found himself the subject of extensive trade rumors leading up to the mid-season deadline.

The Packers never moved Doubs, but his history of friction with the coaching staff and his production over the last four seasons renders him a strong candidate to depart in free agency, which is exactly what Jeremy Fowler of ESPN predicted he will do.

“The Packers are expected to part ways with free agent Romeo Doubs, who will do well on the open market,” Fowler reported on Wednesday, December 10.

Romeo Doubs Hasn’t Shined as Bright Due to Above-Average Talent Across Packers’ Roster

Doubs has played in 56 of 64 possible regular season games and earned 47 total starts. He has amassed 192 catches for 2,242 yards and 20 TDs over that span.

That said, the former fourth-round pick has been upset about his role in the offense multiple times before, particularly with regards to the looks he gets near the end zone. It got bad enough that the Packers suspended him in October of last year for one game due to detrimental conduct.

Fellow receiver Jayden Reed has led the team in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons, though did not eclipse 900 yards in either of those two campaigns. Tight end Tucker Kraft was on pace to take over that mantle in 2025 before suffering a season-ending ACL injury.

In short, the Packers have had multiple good options, including Doubs, over the past several seasons, but not really any great ones. That has resulted in Jordan Love spreading the football around more than perhaps Doubs, who appears to fancy himself a more valuable option than Green Bay’s offense has shown him to be, believes the quarterback should.

Packers More Likely to Invest in Christian Watson Longterm Than Romeo Doubs

Rookie Matthew Golden, a first-round pick, could ultimately prove to be a No. 1 option for Love. The team also invested in a one-year extension for vertical threat Christian Watson in 2025, despite the fact that he tore his ACL in January.

“The Packers look smart with the Christian Watson extension, getting ahead of his market while he rehabbed an injury,” Fowler wrote Wednesday. “The team and player did a bridge one-year, $11 million extension in September, a month before he returned to action. He has been impressive upon return, pumping out a 25-452-5 line with big play after big play.”

“Watson has the upside to be a No. 1 if he puts it all together, which could lead him back to the bargaining table this offseason,” Fowler continued.

Doubs has a market value of nearly $12 million annually over a new four-year deal ($48 million total), according to Spotrac, though it is unlikely Green Bay is willing to go that high after drafting Golden, and if it decides to bring Watson back on a new contract.

Reed returned to the field last week after a broken collarbone and foot injury sidelined him in Week 2. Kraft will also return sometime in 2026, which leaves Doubs and his contract demands the likely odd-man out.
