Lions in Trade Talks for Former Seahawks Pro Bowl Cornerback to Strengthen Defense After Long-Term Injuries to Two Starters

The Detroit Lions are facing a critical situation in their secondary as two starting cornerbacks, D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, are sidelined with long-term injuries. With the season intensifying, the team led by head coach Dan Campbell is reportedly exploring a trade to fill the void at cornerback. Sources indicate that the Lions are targeting a former Pro Bowl cornerback from the Seattle Seahawks, a player known for speed, length, and elite coverage skills — exactly the type of reinforcement Detroit needs to stabilize its defense.

This move comes as Detroit aims to maintain competitiveness in the NFC despite a depleted backfield. Losing both starters at once has left the Lions vulnerable, particularly against high-powered passing attacks. Meanwhile, the Seahawks, currently 4-2 and locked in a tight race atop the NFC West with the 49ers and Rams, appear open to moving players who may not align with their long-term plans. This creates an opportunity for Detroit to step in and negotiate a potential trade.

The player in question is Tariq Woolen, a third-year cornerback with Seattle and a former Pro Bowl selection in 2022. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Woolen made an immediate impact as a rookie thanks to his speed and ball skills. This season, however, he has seen his role reduced, partly due to injury and partly because of shifts in Seattle’s defensive strategy. These circumstances have fueled trade speculation, with the Seahawks reportedly open to moving him before the trade deadline. When asked about stepping in for Detroit, Woolen confidently stated:
“I know the shoes I’m stepping into won’t be small, but I thrive on challenges like this. Replacing two key corners for the Lions isn’t just a task — it’s my opportunity to show who I am on the field. I want the fans to believe in me as much as I believe in myself, because together, we can turn this moment into something special.”

NFL insider Kristopher Knox included Woolen in his “NFL Trade Block Big Board” for Week 7, highlighting him as one of the most viable trade assets. Knox suggested that the Seahawks could command a third-round pick in the 2026 draft for the 25-year-old cornerback. Additionally, Ian Rapaport of NFL Network noted Woolen’s decreased playing time, adding that many teams believe he “could be available.” For the Lions, this trade represents both an immediate solution and a long-term investment in their secondary.

Standing 6’4” with a 4.26-second 40-yard dash, Woolen offers a unique combination of size and speed rarely seen in the league. He led all rookies in interceptions during his first season and is regarded as one of the top young defensive backs in the NFL. Joining Detroit would allow him to pair with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, forming a young yet formidable trio that could provide depth and stability to the Lions’ backfield.

For Seattle, trading Woolen is a strategic move rather than a setback. The Seahawks are focusing on developing younger talent, including Devon Witherspoon and Riq Blount, while adding a valuable draft pick to prepare for the 2026 season. This could give them the flexibility to strengthen their roster in key areas while maintaining a competitive edge in the NFC West.

For Detroit, acquiring Woolen could be a defining move in their playoff pursuit. Dan Campbell values toughness and speed in his defensive backs — traits Woolen possesses naturally. If the trade is completed, the Lions would not only fill an immediate need but also add a cornerstone player for the future. A timely acquisition like this could turn Detroit from a playoff contender into a true NFC threat.

With the trade deadline approaching, all eyes will be on the Lions and Seahawks. Will Detroit make the move to bring in a former Pro Bowl cornerback who has already proven he can perform at the highest level? If so, it would send a strong message that Detroit is serious about contending for the playoffs this season.
