Brock Purdy Launches $6 Million “Freedom Ranch” to Rescue and Rehabilitate Abandoned Horses
California – September 25, 2025 — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has made headlines off the field with a bold and deeply personal initiative. On Thursday, Purdy officially announced the opening of Freedom Ranch, a sprawling 150-acre sanctuary in Northern California, valued at over $6 million, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned and abused horses.
In a heartfelt statement during the unveiling, Purdy shared his vision for the project, emphasizing that it’s about more than just sheltering animals — it’s about creating a transformative space for both horses and humans.
“This is more than a shelter,” Purdy said. “We offer rehab, retraining, 24/7 veterinary care, and most importantly, a place where kids and families can connect with these horses. Every horse here gets a second chance at life — and we hope to give people a new perspective on compassion and care in the process.”
A Mission Born from Childhood Roots
Purdy revealed that his love for horses began when he was a child growing up in Arizona. His family often visited local farms and riding stables, and he became aware of the struggles many horses face — from abandonment to mistreatment in competitive racing and work environments.

“Some of these horses come from really heartbreaking situations,” Purdy explained. “Neglect, abuse, abandonment — they’ve been through it all. I knew that once I was in a position to help, I wanted to make a difference.”
That dream became reality as Purdy used a portion of his recent endorsement earnings and NFL contract to fund Freedom Ranch’s development. The sanctuary now includes state-of-the-art barns, open pastures, equine therapy facilities, and a full-time veterinary team.
Holistic Care and Rehabilitation
Freedom Ranch’s approach goes beyond basic rescue operations. Each horse undergoes personalized rehabilitation, including physical therapy, behavioral retraining, and specialized nutrition plans.
The ranch’s veterinary center, equipped with cutting-edge technology, provides around-the-clock care for injuries and chronic conditions. There are also dedicated training areas to help horses regain confidence and skills before being placed in foster care or adopted by qualified families.
Additionally, Freedom Ranch is launching a community outreach program, inviting children, especially those facing emotional or behavioral challenges, to engage with the horses through therapeutic riding sessions and educational workshops.
“Horses have this incredible ability to heal,” said Dr. Laura Martinez, Freedom Ranch’s lead veterinarian. “The bond they form with kids and families is powerful. We’ve already seen amazing breakthroughs in just a few weeks of our pilot program.”
Inspiring Others to Take Action
Purdy hopes Freedom Ranch will serve as a national model for equine rescue efforts and encourage other professional athletes to get involved in animal welfare causes.
“This isn’t just about California,” Purdy said. “We want to set a standard that can be replicated across the country. If other athletes, business leaders, and community members step up, imagine the difference we could make.”
Several of Purdy’s NFL teammates were present at the launch, including tight end George Kittle, who praised his quarterback’s leadership both on and off the field.
“What Brock’s doing here is incredible,” Kittle said. “He’s always been a team-first guy, and now he’s showing that same heart for animals and kids who need it most.”
Looking Toward the Future
Freedom Ranch has already rescued dozens of horses ahead of its official opening, and expansion plans are in motion. Purdy aims to eventually partner with schools, therapy centers, and other nonprofits to broaden the ranch’s impact.
As Purdy returns to leading the 49ers this season, he says the sanctuary will remain close to his heart.
“At the end of the day, football is my job, but this — this is my legacy,” Purdy said with emotion. “These horses deserve love, respect, and a real chance to thrive. If Freedom Ranch can inspire even one person to take action, then it’s all worth it.”
