The day after the Philadelphia Eagles’ 38–20 victory over the New York Giants, linebacker Zack Baun was not celebrating like the rest of his teammates. Instead, he spent his afternoon at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia – visiting Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo, who had suffered a severe leg injury in the second half of the game.

“I felt heartbroken the moment it happened,” Baun said. “You play this game to compete, to win — but not to see someone’s career put on hold like that. I knew I had to see him, not just send a message. So I immediately went to the hospital to see him, I wanted to look him in the eyes and tell him I was thinking about him.”

Baun had already shared after the game that the hit which caused Skattebo’s leg injury deeply affected him. The linebacker admitted he could barely focus during the team’s postgame celebrations. For him, the win felt hollow knowing another player was in pain because of a play he was part of.

When Baun arrived at the hospital, the meeting between the two was described as emotional yet genuine.

“He was sitting up when I got there,” Baun recalled. “I told him how sorry I was about what happened, that it was never my intention. He smiled and told me, ‘That’s football, man. Don’t beat yourself up over it.’ Hearing that from him meant more than I can say.”

According to Giants team officials, Skattebo appreciated the gesture, telling Baun he respected the way he handled the situation. The two even spoke about their shared love for the game and the sacrifices that come with it.

“He told me he’ll be back — stronger, hungrier,” Baun said. “That’s when I realized what kind of competitor he really is. I walked out of there inspired. You never want to be the reason someone’s hurt, but you can always be there to show respect.”

Head coach Nick Sirianni later praised Baun’s actions, saying it reflected the culture the Eagles aim to build — one rooted in integrity and empathy.

“Zack didn’t just play with heart — he showed it,” Sirianni said. “That’s what being an Eagle is all about.”
