WASHINGTON — A newly released tranche of Justice Department records related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein has intensified political pressure on federal authorities and renewed scrutiny of Donald Trump, even as many of the most consequential details remain obscured by heavy redactions.

The documents, released under the requirements of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, offer fragments of information rather than definitive conclusions. But together, lawmakers and legal experts say, they raise troubling questions about the scope of Epstein’s network, the Justice Department’s handling of the case, and the identities of individuals who were never charged.

Among the disclosures is a 2020 internal email from a Justice Department official stating that Mr. Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet “many more times than previously reported.” That assertion appears to conflict with Mr. Trump’s repeated public claims that he never flew on Epstein’s aircraft. Epstein flight logs, which have been public for years, already included Mr. Trump’s name, though they did not establish wrongdoing.

One email cited in the release describes a 1993 flight listing only Epstein, Mr. Trump and a third passenger whose name remains redacted. Other references note that women later considered potential witnesses in the prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell appeared on passenger lists for separate flights involving Epstein and Mr. Trump. No document released so far alleges criminal conduct by Mr. Trump.

The records also reveal that in 2021 the Justice Department subpoenaed employment records from Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s Florida club. Officials have not disclosed whose records were sought or why, though Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre previously said she worked there as a teenager.

The incomplete nature of the disclosures has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers across the ideological spectrum. Ro Khanna, a co-sponsor of the transparency law, said the redactions violate both the letter and the spirit of the statute.

“When we wrote this law, we explicitly said reputational harm or embarrassment was not a valid reason to withhold names,” Mr. Khanna said in an interview. “The Justice Department appears more concerned with protecting powerful men than with honoring survivors.”

According to the released materials, prosecutors identified at least ten alleged Epstein co-conspirators who were never charged. Their names remain fully redacted. Mr. Khanna and Thomas Massie have warned Attorney General Pam Bondi that failure to release unredacted files could result in contempt proceedings.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also publicly questioned why survivors’ names appear in some documents while alleged perpetrators remain hidden.

Beyond Mr. Trump, the files reference other prominent figures. One email appears to be addressed to Ms. Maxwell from Prince Andrew, containing language that investigators described as suggestive but inconclusive. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment.

The records further include images of what investigators believe was a forged Austrian passport bearing Epstein’s photograph, as well as internal correspondence suggesting confusion and delays within federal offices on the day Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019.

Former federal prosecutor Alexander Acosta, who approved Epstein’s controversial 2008 plea deal while serving as U.S. attorney in Florida, is referenced in emails discussing why victims were not consulted — a failure later ruled unlawful by a federal court.

Adding a political dimension to the renewed scrutiny, Bill Clinton has in recent days publicly called for the complete release of the Epstein files, saying transparency is the only way to restore public trust. Mr. Clinton has long acknowledged flying on Epstein’s plane but has denied any involvement in criminal activity.

The contrasting responses from Mr. Clinton and Mr. Trump have sharpened partisan tensions. Allies of Mr. Trump argue that the staggered release of documents reflects bureaucratic dysfunction, not deliberate concealment. Critics counter that the slow, selective disclosures amount to an institutional cover-up.

Jack O’Donnell, a former Trump casino executive who has previously described Epstein and Mr. Trump as close acquaintances, said the incremental release strategy was “deeply unfair” to victims. “These were children,” he said. “Dragging this out protects no one but the powerful.”

For survivors and their advocates, the frustration lies not only in what has been revealed, but in what remains hidden behind black ink. The law requires full disclosure, they argue, and anything less perpetuates the very dynamics that allowed Epstein’s crimes to continue for years.

As Congress presses the Justice Department for answers, the documents have reopened an old wound in American public life — one that blends wealth, power and institutional failure. Whether the remaining files will bring clarity, accountability, or further controversy remains uncertain. But for now, the questions far outnumber the answers.
