What was supposed to be the happiest moment of Derrick Harmon’s young career quickly turned into heartbreak. Just hours after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Harmon’s mother, Tiffany Saine, passed away while on life support.
The bittersweet reality struck deeply for the Oregon defensive tackle, who shared an unbreakable bond with his mother. In a video posted to ESPN’s X account, Harmon described her as his biggest inspiration:
“She means everything to me,” Harmon said. “She’s the reason I’m here. She’s the one that did everything for me to get to this point. I love you, mom. Everything I do is for you. I’m forever grateful.”
Harmon revealed that his mother endured eight brain surgeries throughout his childhood and suffered a severe stroke during his freshman year at Michigan State, leaving her partially paralyzed. Despite her struggles, she remained his emotional anchor and motivator throughout his football journey.
When Harmon transferred to Oregon for his final college season, he said it was one of the hardest decisions of his life. “It was probably the hardest decision I had to make,” he said. “My mom told me every decision I made so far was for her — now it was time to make one for myself.”
While at Oregon, Harmon emerged as one of the top defensive linemen in the nation, recording 45 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks in 14 games. He used part of his NIL earnings to buy his mom a wheelchair-accessible van, and the two spoke daily through FaceTime.
After Harmon’s selection at No. 21 overall, Steelers President Art Rooney II shared condolences on behalf of the organization:
“Though we are excited to select Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the death of his mother, Tiffany Saine. We will support Derrick and his family however we can as he navigates this period of grief.”
Rooney added that the organization hopes Harmon finds comfort in the support of teammates and fans:
“In times like this, we hope Derrick finds comfort in the love and support from the organization and Steelers fans around the world. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Derrick’s entire family.”
For Harmon, his NFL journey now carries a deeper purpose — one built on resilience, sacrifice, and the love of a mother who never stopped believing in him.
