Pittsburgh, PA – October 17, 2025
What was supposed to be a defining drive for the Pittsburgh Steelers turned into one of the night’s most controversial moments — and wide receiver
DK Metcalf didn’t shy away from taking the blame.
Midway through the third quarter of the Steelers’ 33–31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Metcalf appeared to secure a crucial first down before cornerback
DJ Turner ripped the ball out of his hands, resulting in a stunning interception that flipped the game’s momentum. The play immediately sparked outrage from fans, with many insisting the receiver was down before losing possession.
After reviewing the replay, officials ruled it a live ball — Bengals’ takeaway. The call stood, and so did the frustration inside Acrisure Stadium.
Speaking to reporters after the game,
Metcalf offered a blunt and honest reflection. “I had the ball, I didn’t finish the play. That’s on me,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what the refs saw — I’ve got to hold on. When you carry the football in this league, you carry the game with it. I let that one slip away, and that’s something I can’t let happen again.”
The turnover came at a pivotal moment, halting a promising Steelers drive that had already crossed midfield. Instead of a potential scoring opportunity, Cincinnati capitalized with a touchdown on the ensuing possession — a 12-point swing that ultimately shaped the game’s outcome.
Head coach Mike Tomlin defended his star receiver, calling the play “a lesson learned the hard way.” But even he admitted the timing was brutal for a team fighting to stay in control.
For Metcalf, the moment stung deeper than a stat line. Known for his physical dominance and intensity, the veteran wideout faced the cameras without excuses — a response that earned respect even from critics.
“You own the mistake, you move forward, and you make it right,” Metcalf said before walking away. “That’s what Pittsburgh football is supposed to be about.”
