The Green Bay Packers have strengthened their secondary depth, agreeing to a one-year prove-it deal worth up to $6.5 million with one of the league’s most intriguing free agents. The deal follows a private Thursday workout at Lambeau Field, where the cornerback reportedly impressed the coaching staff with his agility and conditioning.

While an agreement has been reached, the contract will not be finalized until he passes an extensive medical evaluation, a necessary step after his recent spinal fusion surgery earlier this year.

That cornerback is former Los Angeles Chargers standout Asante Samuel Jr., who was medically cleared for football activity in late October following months of recovery. Multiple teams — including the Panthers, Vikings, and Bears — had expressed interest, but the Packers ultimately secured his commitment after his strong showing in Green Bay.

Samuel, 26, offers valuable experience and proven production. Over four seasons with the Chargers, he started 47 of 50 games, tallying 176 tackles, six interceptions, and 37 pass deflections while earning a reputation for his sharp instincts and fluid coverage technique.

“I’ve had to rebuild myself physically and mentally,” Samuel said after his workout. “But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that resilience always wins.”
