REPORT: Eagles Set to Sign Veteran Star Edge Rusher Following Za’Darius Smith’s Retirement. bebe

Matt Judon celebrates his $10k fine from Week 1 getting rescinded on Twitter

Philadelphia, PA — October 16, 2025

Just days after veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith shocked the team by announcing his retirement, sources around the league say the Philadelphia Eagles are actively discussing a potential move to sign Matthew Judon, the former New England Patriots star, to bolster their depleted pass-rush rotation.

Philadelphia entered the season already thin at the edge rusher position following the offseason departures of Brandon Graham (retirement) and Josh Sweat (free agency). The recent losses of Nolan Smith Jr. and Ogbo Okoronkwo to triceps injuries, combined with Smith’s sudden exit, have left the Eagles with limited options opposite Jalyx Hunt.

According to multiple league insiders, the Eagles’ front office has “held internal discussions” about reaching out to Judon, who remains a free agent after being released by New England in early September. Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler, recorded 32 sacks and 61 quarterback hits between 2021–2023 before injuries limited his 2024 season.

A source familiar with the situation told ESPN’s Tim McManus:

“Philadelphia has always valued veteran leadership on defense, and Judon fits that mold perfectly. With Smith gone, the team wants someone who can step in right away and make an impact.”

If signed, Judon would reunite with several former teammates and coaches he’s faced throughout his career, including some from his Baltimore Ravens days. His versatility and experience in multiple defensive schemes make him a natural fit for defensive coordinator Sean Desai’s system.

Financially, the Eagles are in a position to make a short-term move, with roughly $6.8 million in cap space remaining. A one-year incentive-laden deal similar to Smith’s $4.25 million contract is reportedly being discussed as the most realistic structure.

Head coach Nick Sirianni was asked Monday about the team’s plans to replace Smith but declined to comment on specific names.

“We’re exploring every option to make sure our defense stays strong,” Sirianni said. “We have tremendous respect for what Za’Darius gave us, but our focus now is moving forward.”

With the Minnesota Vikings up next after the mini-bye, Philadelphia could make a move as early as next week if talks progress smoothly. Signing Judon would give the Eagles a proven veteran presence and a much-needed spark to their struggling pass rush as they look to regain momentum in the NFC East race.
