The fallout from Week 8’s heated showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers has now extended far beyond the field. Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis, one of the most respected voices in Steelers history, has called on the NFL to open a formal investigation into referee Adrian Hill’s officiating crew, following a series of controversial no-calls that fans and analysts say unfairly targeted Pittsburgh.

The controversy erupted after a viral video showed a crucial third-quarter moment where Packers linebacker Rashan Gary (#56) appeared to clearly jump offsides before the snap. Despite the obvious infraction, no penalty was called. Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers (#8) assumed he had a free play, threw a deep ball to George Pickens (#14) — but the play ended in an interception.
The clip, viewed over 86,000 times within hours, ignited outrage across the NFL community, with fans calling the officiating “embarrassing” and “game-changing.” Many pointed out that Hill’s crew has already been under scrutiny earlier this season for questionable decisions in games involving the Chiefs and Dolphins.
Speaking to FOX Sports on Monday morning, Jerome Bettis didn’t hold back his frustration:
“THIS ISN’T ABOUT ONE CALL — IT’S ABOUT RESPECT FOR THE GAME. WHEN OFFICIALS MISS SOMETHING THAT OBVIOUS, IT DOESN’T JUST HURT THE STEELERS — IT HURTS THE CREDIBILITY OF THE ENTIRE LEAGUE.”
Bettis, who helped lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl XL championship, emphasized that accountability should apply to everyone involved in the game — including referees:
“PLAYERS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR EVERY MISTAKE. COACHES ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. OFFICIALS SHOULD BE TOO. THE NFL CAN’T JUST LOOK AWAY AND PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED. THE FANS DESERVE BETTER.”
He went on to voice the growing frustration shared by thousands of Steelers supporters across the country:
“I’VE PLAYED THIS GAME WITH HEART AND RESPECT, AND I KNOW WHAT FAIRNESS LOOKS LIKE. WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE WASN’T FAIR TO THE PLAYERS OR THE FANS. STEELERS NATION DESERVES BETTER — AND THE NFL NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX IT.”
According to sources close to the organization, Steelers owner Art Rooney II is also said to be “extremely frustrated” by the officiating and supports the idea of a formal review by the league’s officiating department. While the NFL has not released an official statement, insiders believe that Walt Anderson, the league’s head of officiating, may order a tape review of Hill’s performance as early as Tuesday.
The Steelers fell 35–25 to the Packers, but many — including Bettis — argue that officiating mistakes directly affected the game’s outcome. The controversy adds to a growing list of questionable calls that have fueled debate about officiating integrity and transparency in the NFL.
