The Patriots’ latest practice squad has captured fan attention with the appearance of a former second-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft. sosad

The New England Patriots have yet to add a big name in the trade market despite numerous rumors, but have added a highly touted draft pick to their practice squad. The practice quad already features some talented players: preseason standouts John Jiles and Miles Battle, productive defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms, and three-time Super Bowl Champion Darius Harris.

Atlanta Falcons - Safety Richie Grant

Now, Richie Grant, the 40th overall pick in 2021, is added to that cache of players.

Grant, 27, was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons at the beginning of the second round in 2021 from UCF. The Central Florida standout played five seasons with the Golden Knights and was one of the team’s best players.

While his coverage ability is notable, his strength lies in run support: he recorded a 90.0 PFF grade against the run during his final collegiate season.

Grant initially looked sound in the NFL, recording 58.6 and 64.9 overall PFF grades in his first two seasons. Neither were elite, but the growth showed the Falcons they might have something. 2023 was a major step back, and in 2024, he was completely cut out of the defense after losing the starting job to veteran Justin Simmons. The Falcons started Grant only once, and he played 700 fewer defensive snaps than he did the season prior.

The Patriots could play Richie Grant right away in their inconsistent secondary

Grant was released by the 49ers, where he spent the offseason, back in August. While he hasn’t been up to par lately, the Patriots offer an opportunity for the former second-rounder to get his flow back and make an immediate impact.

Currently, the Patriots’ safeties are in an odd spot: rookie Craig Woodson and veteran Jaylinn Hawkins have been solid, but both have been better closer to the line than in coverage. The highly paid Kyle Dugger has been relegated to a backup, while 2024 UDFA Dell Pettus is a depth piece.

Hawkins missed last week with an injury, and Dugger replaced him. The ex-Lenoir-Rhyne safety struggled, allowing a deep ball to Chris Olave on the opening play and recording a 52.3 PFF grade for the game. In the event either starter gets hurt again, perhaps giving Pettus or Grant a chance could make sense.

Dugger is a far more expensive option than either Pettus or Grant. If the Patriots cannot find a trade partner mid-season, they might opt to cut ties, given his rough play. If this were to happen, Grant could have an opportunity to contribute as a backup and special teamer, especially given the overlap as their strong run defenders.
