The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached a breaking point after dropping three of their last four games, prompting tough internal decisions as the offense continues to sputter and previously trusted playmakers no longer deliver when needed most.

Calvin Austin III has become the center of that struggle. After a promising opener, his production collapsed, creating a significant weakness in a receiving corps that was supposed to elevate Aaron Rodgers and stabilize the passing attack.
Across the last six games, Austin has managed only 17 receptions for 167 yards and one touchdown. Those numbers simply cannot stand for a player logging over 200 offensive snaps during that stretch.
The low point came on Sunday Night Football against the Chargers, when Austin caught only two passes on seven targets and dropped a critical ball that turned into a late-game interception, sealing the Steelers’ fate.
Rodgers’ passer rating when targeting Austin sits at an alarming 61.9, a metric that highlights not just missed opportunities, but an overall lack of chemistry, trust, and consistency at a vital position.
Meanwhile, second-year receiver Roman Wilson has quietly built a compelling case for promotion. Despite limited usage, he has turned 15 targets into 11 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns, maximizing every opportunity
The efficiency gap is enormous. Rodgers owns a 144.6 passer rating when throwing to Wilson, more than double his rating when targeting Austin, showcasing the reliability and playmaking Wilson brings to the offense.
Wilson has also impressed on special teams, flashing physicality and discipline as a gunner. Aside from one fumble in Week 9, he has been steady, focused, and ready for a larger offensive role.
With the offense struggling and the season slipping away, the Steelers cannot afford to keep waiting for Austin to regain form. A depth chart shake-up is no longer optional—it’s necessary for survival.
Now, with Austin headed to the bench and Wilson rising into the WR2 role, Pittsburgh hopes this change provides the spark they desperately need to revive the passing game and rescue their season.
